Safety Tips for Solo Female Travel in Goa, India
Are airport transfers in Goa safe?
This is what I get asked about most. Of course I can never say 100% that nothing bad can happen, but in general, yes it is safe to take a Government taxi when you arrive in Goa.
You just head out of the baggage claim to a long line of people buying their taxi ticket. You can pay with card, but you need cash to pay the extra tax to the driver. You can guess a ride anywhere in Goa from the airport would be between 1,300 and 2,000 Rs. There are not rickshaws here, just taxis. It’s a cost you have no choice but to pay. It is best to use this service than walking outside and arguing with drivers for the best price, which is not always the case in other areas of India.
Is it safe to stay in beach huts?
There are such a variety of beach huts. If you are traveling alone I recommend you stay in ones a little off the beach that are made with concrete or wood and have doors that lock. This also prevents theft, which is the biggest issue with the beach huts. I have met many travelers who had their huts broken into.
In general, if you are alone you should avoid huts that are made with just bamboo and banana leaves. There are plenty of budget options which are safer in Goa.
No matter what hotel you choose, you need to always lock your doors.
This is Jamboree Creek, a great place to meet solo female travelers since I tell most girls who e-mail to stay here!
Is it safe to rent a scooter and drive around alone in Goa?
The biggest issue you’ll have with getting a scooter alone as a girl is being ripped off by the sales person. They might think you are an easy target. Scooter rentals should be around 150 Rs per day if you are taking it for multiple days or up to 300 Rs. per day if you are taking it for 1 day only.
You have to wear a helmet or the police might pull you over and give you a ticket.
PS: If you are coming to Goa, you definitely need my ebook, Insider’s Guide to Goa. It’s 170 pages filled with the most up to date, comprehensive information about Goa plus it has all my secret places to go that I’ve found after living here almost five years. This book has 50x more information about Goa than my blog and is organized to make things easy for you to find. Is it safe to go to parties alone in Goa?
I wouldn’t. I suggest you make friends at your guest house or hostel and go out with them. Goa is a huge drug scene and people do put things in people’s drinks like anywhere else in the world. You should be extra cautious here.
You should remember that Indian men may take polite and friendly behavior as flirting. We have a different culture to Indians and women here are a little more reserved.
There have been murders and rapes of girls in Goa both tourists and locals in the past in Goa. Sometimes this is blamed on the girl being too drunk (so unfair). Sometimes it’s blamed on the girl drowning by her own fault (when her body was dumped in the sea). These are rare and maybe happen once every other year or less often. Its no less safe than anywhere else- but like NYC I wouldn’t go out to bar alone.
Can I leave my stuff on the beach in Goa while I swim?
I don’t unless I have a friend watching them or I am at a beach shack where I know the owners and they keep an eye. I have had 5 people email in 3 years of blogging to say their things were stolen so of course it’s not that often. I think it’s best to be safe though and not take much money or electronics to the beach anywhere in the world.
Who can I call in an Emergency in Goa?
Call 100 for the police. I highly recommend having a phone with a local SIM in it while traveling in Goa. You will want to make sure you always add sufficient recharge so it is working in case of an emergency.
If you need to speak to someone regarding your passport, flight, train ticket issues or to reach a local hospital here is a list of relevant phone numbers.
What is the best hospital in Goa?
If you have a small issue and are in Anjuna or Vagator you can go to St. Anthony’s Hospital. I don’t think it’s a good hospital but for little things it’s okay and nearby. I would go here if you get in a small scooter accident and need a wound cleaned or Tetanus shot.
If you have a slightly big issue than the Government hospital in Mapusa is okay. I have gone here for some things like Rabies immunoglobulins or X-ray. If you have a serious stomach pain you can go here for tests.
If you are in serious trouble like a big bike accident with a broken arm or you need surgery you should go to Galaxy hospital in Mapusa. It’s a private hospital with American trained doctors (a wife and husband couple) who own it.
An extra tip:
Because of the drugs here, you might find that late at night taxi drivers are drunk or high. You should avoid getting in these cars. You should avoid arguing with men in Goa late at night. They can be aggressive if they have been drinking. Unfortunately, Goa is known for having a high alcohol consumption by the local men and it’s part of the laid-back culture here. It’s something to keep in mind.
Goa is like the rest of India in most ways. It’s more relaxed here and you can party more, dress how you like, and wear a bikini with little to no stares. But, it’s still India. Here are 14 tips for solo female travel in India that you should also keep in mind while in Goa.

Alex – thanks! I hope you enjoy Goa.
for sure she will, I am Indian solo traveller, nice blog Rachel.
@Alex – do you want to join party scene for new year party 2017..I am looking for anyone who can join me , I plan to try solo partying in goa :)
Each and every point is absolutely correct!!
I know here men take friendly behavior as flirting. When i was in Goa with a friend It did not let me feel I am in India. but yes when I was alone the stares, the atmosphere was no less than any other part of India. (harsh but true!!)
Good tips Rachel!
Plus you are lucky! There is no party scene in Udaipur. :( Although Poonam Haveli held a very nice New Years Eve party. Anyway, I have a friend who was down in Goa for a few months. I don’t remember exactly where she was but she rented a scooter and was driving through an area were there are no shops or anything. She had her bag slung around her and some guys grab it. She crashed along with the bike and they got away with her bag. So I would tell everyone to be mindful of their possessions and person while riding through less populated areas. She said she feels like they were there waiting for someone to come by, that it was not just a situation of opportunity. However, she did say that after she crashed the few people that were around rushed to help her and the people in the area she was staying in helped take care of her after. :) When she came to Udaipur a month or so later she still had huge scabs on her knees.
Happy and safe travels to everyone!
Such a shame to hear that. I have heard of this happening to the mother of a friend of mine. There are some shady situations in Goa which is not too shocking I guess – but a lot of people think it’s a happy hippy place and nothing bad will happen so they let their guard down.
Yeah, I agree. I am sure I let my guard down here in Udaipur since I am so familiar with it now. It is just good to be aware of situations so you can keep them in the back of your mind. Plus if you have a scooty you can put your bag under the seat. :)
‘Nice tips Rachel!
I’ve heard a lot about the party scene in Goa, but like Thailand and Bali, you’ve just got to be careful and not go around alone at night. When I was a fresh graduate and travelled through Asia during my GAP year, I got so much hassle in Bali that I used to ask random European guys to pretend to be my husband in order to get the local lads off my case! I even got hit on by the waiter who served me my dinner!
India wasn’t too bad but there was a lot of contant staring by the local lads who seemed to be over-whelmed seeing two European girls travelling together – one blond with very fair skin, and one brunette, with very dark skin (me)!
When I went back to Bali a few years ago with husband and child in tow, the attitide of the local men was so different. They were polite, running around to make sure we had taxis and anything we needed. My husband was ill in Bali, and they sent over soup, a doctor, and a maid. All for free!
Yes! In Bali now and loving the locals! It’s another world :)
Hope you’re enjoying Bali despite the rain! I found Hippie in Heels before embarking to live in India for the first time and became an avid reader. Now I’ve traveled 26 states as a solo female traveller I always get the question: Is it safe to travel in India for girls? After traveling through 26 of 29 states, traveling in India is just like traveling in any country. I adore India and cannot wait to return this year. I love your blog and you have been a catalyst for my very India trip (now Im totally hooked on India). Thanks for writing enjoy your trip!
That’s amazing – thanks for reading! How cool that you’ve traveled through so many states. Such an accomplishment!
Quick note on some other comments- yes there can be theft, this happens in any country. I have had my camera stolen from a restaurant in Barcelona. Every country has this issue, as you said, just because its known as a ‘hippie place’ doesn’t mean you should let your guard down as would not anywhere else. :) I think as a whole I found the hospitality in India to be of a high standard.
Hi Rachel, I’m planning on travelling to Goa for a couple of days this July on my own ( I’m in my early 50’s). One of the days I would like to spend touring a spice plantation and the other day just relaxing by the beach ( weather permitting of course ) . Can you recommend a decent place to stay on the waterfront , and a spice plantation that would be open for tours? Thank you
Hi Trudi, yes the plantations are open in the monsoon, check out sahakari spice plantation. on the water though, you won’t find places in the monsoon because they take down the shacks for the rainy season.
Hi Rachel,
We are 2 sisters travelling to Goa on Feb 24. Is it fine to stay near calungate beach? As you said it’s not good to party alone there, need to make friends.
Anyone in for joining us during Feb 24-28? Most welcome guys and girls !!
Thanks isha
Hi Rachel, I’m early 50’s and taking my Daughter to Goa at easter. can you recommend an elephant experience? the websites are so varied but we’re not really into elephant shows or rides etc, just want to see and spend time with elephants. Some experiences have an overnight stay in mud huts in the jungle – would we be safe as 2 females?
thanks jo
All the places with elephants here offer rides and I’m skeptical that they care for the elephants and don’t still trap wild ones – but if I did recommend one it would be Sahakari and just looking at them, not riding them
ok thanks very much – i’ll look into it.
i agree with Rachel, They break their spirit and treat the elephants cruelly in order to do what they want them to do.
I hope they will follow Thailand’s lead. Their are very few places now where you can ride an elephant. The amount of refuges for elephants is growing. All these elephants are rescued from places where they were once ridden. I went to the Elephant nature park in the north of Thailand where there is no riding of elephants but you can get up close, pat them, go with them into the river and splash around. each elephant has a mahout to look after them. . There are at least 3 of these refuges that i know of in thailand and one in cambodia. I hope one day India will be like that too. ..
Hi Rachel, that’s a lovely blog you’re writing and sharing your experience with others. I, myself am going solo to Goa tomorrow and would like to have your recommendations on safe places to stay at in Calangute/Baga or even any beach that you’d like to suggest since you don’t prefer Baga. My idea is not to stay far from most happening areas. Are there any options with beautiful surroundings/view and below 2k per night? Also, since I’ll be staying alone, what else can be done in Goa besides just going to beaches and cafés?
Hello,
I’m traveling solo to Goa this year. Planning to spend my days in Palolem beach, Canacona, South Goa. Do you have any inputs to.give about South goa or Palolem?
