My Top 5 restaurants in Goa post continuously draws in the viewers looking for a bite to eat here, so I’m going to expand on that- I mean, you don’t think I only eat at 5 restaurants do you?! Here are ten more of the best restaurants in Goa.
Before I make your mouth water with all the best food in Goa, I have two links to other work I did last week to share. First was a feature article on That Backpacker, a huge travel blog, where I wrote “There’s a Place in Goa” about expat life in Goa, India. Second, I wrote My Local Eats: Goa for Ashley Abroad, one of my favorite travel bloggers! I hope you take a second to check them out.
There are so many fantastic spots in Goa and it seems like every week, I learn about even one or two “best restaurants in Goa”. The perfect mix of food is available and it’s the best of the best because it’s locals from those regions making it. If you do your research, you’ll find that little old married couple that came down to Goa to open a French restaurant or Italian Bakery.
Make sure you see the top 5 from the other post because those are still my favorites before you read on.
There are still some Goa staple’s that people swear by not on the list because I think they’re a bit overrated… these are just the next 10 restaurants Ben and I eat regularly at- because they’re awesome. I could seriously go on and on and make it a top 20, but I’ll give you something to look forward to!
Update: in 2015, I wrote this list of the best restaurants overall, so defintiely check that out as it’s more up to date.
10 More Best Restaurants in Goa
1. Baba Au Rhum // Arpora
Please give me magic to never gain more weight so I can just keep eating baguettes here. Please. This French and all-around European eatery serves up the tastiest wood-fired pizza in Goa in my opinion (better than Roma, Fellini’s, and I can’t believe I’m saying this… Basilico- except their Bolognese). They make their ham homemade which is great on the pizzas or in a huge homemade baguette or fresh buttery croissant. Beef burgers are starting to pop up everywhere in Goa but Baba’s are sooo good, right up there with Burger Factory on Anjuna. I order the one with everything, obviously: bacon, egg, and cheese, the “Hercules”. And don’t be surprised if the deserts, like the strawberry tart, you’re having at other restaurants are baked right here at Baba Au Rhum. The caprese salad with homemade vinaigrette is a great lunch. There’s an upstairs balcony perfect for chilling out with for a long brunch. They have a great breakfast option with all homemade pastries and quiches. FYI: They make real coffee. Meal for two 1,000 with starter and desert! House no 453, Cuddos Waddo, Arpora, GA 403518, India.
2. A Reverie // Calangute
Basically the only time I come to Calangute is to eat here. The vibe is set for special romantic nights, with large king chairs and huge pillars, but the reasonable prices make me think I can eat here much more often. For starters my choice is always either the bruschetta, chicken wings, goat cheese salad, or pulled pork tacos. For a main I’ve ordered the steak with onion jam, which comes with 2 sides. I pick mac n’ cheese and salad. Ben likes the beef fillet as well, but mixes it up more often than me, trying the surf n’ turf, ricotta stuffed chicken breast, Himalayan trout, and fish n’ chips Goan style . The menu changed this year and they’ve added this fusion Asian touch, like a lot of places in Goa, but A Reverie did it right especially with the wasabi prawns! I always end with the chocolate trio of chocolate parfait, warm chocolate pudding, and salted caramel almond ice cream. They serve a mean Bloody Mary and other yummy cocktails. Meal for two around 3,000 with starters and 2 cocktails. Holiday St, Arpora, Calangute, Goa 403515, India
3. Sublime // Morjim
Literally the hardest place to order because everything on the menu is so good. Ben swears by the clams, and my other friends like the Goan sausage. I was a huge fan of the mezze plate and chicken lettuce wraps as starters. Blue cheese stuffed beef is their most talked about dish, as well as the sesame tuna, mustard fish, and ginger garlic calamari. It’s another fusion restaurant- they even make lemongrass martinis. It looks a little bit fancy when you walk in, with flowers on the candle-lit tables, but it is on the beach, which keeps it relaxed. The creative chef, Christopher Saleem Agha Bee, only 24, studied all over the world including Santa Barbara. 2,500 for two people with starters and 2 cocktails. Morjim beach (Between Bora Bora & Hakuna Matata), Morjim, Pernem, Goa 403 512, India
4. Ciao Bella // Assagao
Luckily this little Italian joint is just minutes from our house. It’s always quiet and the owner, Mario, comes to talk to everyone who walks in. My favorite order here is the Spaghetti Bolognese as a main and the fried veg as a starter. Other great choices are the sage and butter ravioli, Saturday pizza night, seafood pasta, and the imported spicy sausage pasta (which was a little too hot for me). Some pasta is homemade and it says on the menu which. The menu is quite small, probably because they believe in quality over quantity. Most of what they serve is imported from Italy. To cap off the meal, you get a complimentary shot of their homemade chocolate liquor to go with your panacotta or crème bruleè. Book a table on weekends. Meal for two 1,000 rs with a starter. Assagao Baden Road, Vagator, GA 403507, India
5. La Plage // Ashwem
La Plage is the beachside French restaurant I’ve mentioned before when I told you all about Ashwem beach. I love the burgers, but they are well known for seafood and beef Carpaccio. People rave about the soy sesame tuna, but I’ve haven’t yet tried it. I could actually go there just for the homemade fries and “garlic mayo” which it the closest I get to ranch dressing. Other goodies: seared tuna wasabi mashed potatoes, chicken pate with onion jam, and the new chocolate thali. Meal for two about 2,000 with starters. Mandrem, GA 403512, India
6. Republic of Noodles // Candolim
Located in the Lemon Tree Hotel, this was exactly what I wanted on my birthday last year, because it’s some of the best Asian food in Goa. They serve Thai, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Burmese, Cambodian, and Indonesian dishes. They have yummy BBQ ribs, chili prawns with papaya salsa, pan-fried crab cakes with wasabi mayo, grilled snapper, pot stickers, soups, stir-fries, and scrumptious lamb when it’s available. Other good choices are pork ribs, noodles, and Japanese duck curry. You can watch the food be prepared right in front of you. Under 1,000 rs for two mains with no drinks. Candolim, GA 403515, India
7. Travel Bar // Candolim
Travel Bar is another fusion restaurant in Goa. Ben and I had met the owner multiple times over monsoon last year promising we’d come in soon- but we don’t typically go to that touristy side of town. It’s a shame we waited so long because they have AMAZING food in this hidden little bar. The beef fillet, pork chops, crab cakes, and cauliflower cheese soup are to die for. The have baguette sandwiches, famous burgers, and salads. The market price of the seafood is a little pricey here, so make sure you ask the price ahead of time. One thing you’ll notice quickly in India, a longer menu with lots of mediocre variety is NOT better. A short menu with impressive food is what you want. Travel Bar is closed from 3-7 pm but open all throughout monsoon. 1,500- 2,000 rupees for two people with starters. on road between Candolim and Calangute, Calangute, India
8. Scarlet Juice Center // Chapora
Just next to infamous Ganesh Juice shack in Chapora is smaller Scarlet Juice Center. It’s juice and ice cream, so not much to tell that you can’t already guess. Ganesh is usually packed to the brim and Scarlet’s is identical so we usually find ourselves meeting friends at Scarlet’s. They don’t add water or sugar and can mix delicious varieties of juice for you. Take bottles of it home if you want- the strawberry makes for great vodka mixers! 100 rs or less for one juice. Chapora Main St, Vagator, GA 403509, India
9. Wok n Roll // Sinquerim
MM, ok I think I’m going here tonight. When you arrive you get complimentary green tea and a scrumptious starter of wraps: spinach, chili, coconut, lime, peanuts, sautéed crispy onions, and sweet jam- something nice to munch on while you peruse through the menu. It’s always hard to decide, but we think the starters are better than the mains and usually just order a few to share. Ben’s all-time favorite is the drunken beef starter. Other delish starters are the chicken chili, crab cakes, Thai curries, Balinese fish in banana leaf, honey-glazed spare ribs, pork ribs with ginger plum sauce (sometimes a bit fatty), Thai garlic peppered deep fired prawns, and Vietnamese summer rolls. This is real Asian food, not “Indian-Asian” and is so worth the drive out past Fort Aguada. When we do get a main I go for the chicken and broccoli and Ben gets the black pepper crab. They have famous Malaysian Kway Tiao, and Indonesian Bamee Goreng. I could come here even if only to have the fried ice cream for dessert. 1,500 rs for two people with starters. Beware of mosquitos! House No. 51, Sinquerim, Candolim, Bardez, Goa
10. Gunpowder // Assagao
Also in Assagao, Gunpowder is a South Indian restaurant also in Delhi, although at this time the Delhi one has shut down. The restaurants descriptions says, “covering the Southern peninsula”. My favorite starter is the Andhra prawn masala, you should just go ahead and order two. The taste of the Beef fry & Keralan mutton curry was SO good, but wow it was spicy! You can always ask to tone down on spices. They have a couple Goan dishes that are explained to have been taught to them by local women. I love the flakey malabar paratha and appam. It’s an outdoor place; take bug spray. The shop inside is really cute selling clothes, art, and home decor. From now on, this is my go-to place for Indian food. 800 for two people with a starter. Mapusa – Anjuna – Chapora, Assagao, GA 403507, India
PS: Coming to Goa? I wrote a 170-page e-book, Insider’s Guide to Goa. After five years of living in Goa, I am confident this book is the most comprehensive, up-to-date guide to Goa plus it has all my secrets inside. Click here to buy it now.
I will begin expanding my stomach now!
seriously! These places are really yummy
That is spectacular – I would have never thought your sleepy little ‘hippie town’ would have such incredible offerings.
The big question is – what will you serve in YOUR cafe?
I am now much more motivated to check out Goa, the culinary hotspot on the Arabian Sea (I think).
It surprises so many people how much is available here! I do want to open some kind of cafe :) We wanted to do gourmet sandwiches originally, like what you’d get at Panera, but so many cafes have already amazing ones that’d we’d rather eat so we gave up on that. There is NO mexican in Goa though- but most ingredients are hard to find and only Americans have a taste for it really, Brits aren’t usually super familiar with it.
Baja Cantina Goa – fish tacos and margaritas !!
yes agreed its impossible to find mexican in goa . mezcal vagator closed , poco loco in baga is really average at best , cafe fiesta in palolem was dirty and worst mexican ive had anywhere , and about the only thing that will make up for all that poor show in goa is the burrito boys in arpora ingos saturday night bazaar on saturday nights in season who do an excellent tex mex veggie , orange beef , or chicken burrito which are all excellent and huge .
cheers for the pages on your good site, ive got a huge goa blog with tons of similar stuff on too if you want a nose ;-) http://www.tharobster.wordpress.com
Yes all the Mexican places suck, but actually I don’t like the burritos from the sat market- I’m a bit of a Mexican food snob growing up in the US we have such good options, I just found even with spicy sauce there wasn’t enough flavor! It even the chicken I found to be too sweet.
Hey thanks so much on all your posts on go a. Gives travellers like us an insight into the view of a local, and even better, an expat.
