While in the small town of Melukote, the main attraction should have been the towering old fort, but for me it was the khaddi!
I was so excited for this leg of the tour so it’s no surprise I walked off with 9 meters of the best cotton in India. The plan was to take it back to Goa where I friend of mine would help me make clothes out of it because tailoring clothes in India is one of the many perks of living here. And she did! Pics to follow.
Tailoring Clothes in India with Khaddi
Basically, lots of designers in Goa will make things on a per-order basis for you. There are tailors everywhere but you don’t know if they’re any good. I got 5 meters of a tan/brown, 1.7 of pastel green, and 1.7 of blue. I made 3 short dresses, 1 long dress, and 3 crop tops out of this and still had fabric left. I just show a design of something I already have and have them “copy” it.
In all, the cotton cost me only 1,400 rs or about 25 dollars. It’ll cost a bit to have them made of course, but you’re still ending up with a better deal than buying them in the store, it’s the finest cotton that’s handwoven, and it’s going to look just how you want it to. The best part, I got to meet the women making it and watch them work!
Ok, so here are the items I had made! based of some of my favorite clothes I already had. Remember, this cotton will shrink, so pre-wash. If it doesn’t fit quite right, you can get it altered more just work together with your tailor.
Awesome! I’ve had some amazing men’s stuff tailored in India (well, not for me personally!) and the quality was so much better than off-the-rack stuff, as long as you find a good tailor. With the exception of a little lady’s shop in Hauz Khas Village in Delhi, which has now shut down, I haven’t had much luck with women’s tailors throughout the country, so would be great to hear some recommendations sometimes :)

Yeah it’s so hard to get someone to give up their tailor! lol I had a designer in Goa take mine to her tailor
This is the greatest.
I know I had a couple of subpar tailor experiences in Mumbai… oh well. Maybe I will come to Goa and put your friend to work!
I’d love to see what the outfits look like on you!
ahh bummer.. it’s so hard to find a good tailor- i’ll put a pic on IG next time I wear one!
Cool! I saw this weaving work in Cochin long time back.
Awesome, it’s interesting to watch
Nice to get stuff tailored especially with great quality. Definitely will have to do it when I make it to India.
That is so cool that you can just buy fabric and hire someone to make clothes specific to your body and style! I love that idea. And your clothes are super cute! :-)
Hey
I’m about to give up my job to travel India with a book of clothes I’ve designed. I have 6 months and in that time I hope to source my fabrics and get some clothing made. I was wondering if anyone else has done something similar who can give me some tips. Also where would people recommend going to source fabrics and tailors? Would Goa be more expensive then say Rajasthan because its so weasternised?
Thanks x
Hi, I don’t know how to get you started but I do make my clothes and Goa has no fabrics or suppliers, everyone who makes clothes here gets fabric outside Goa in big factories of Delhi, Jaipur, Bombay.
Hi Rachel, love your posts! could you suggest any good tailors in goa who’d make me clothes like the ones you made?
There aren’t any off season, but the one on the corner of the artjuna road is pretty good!
Wowwwww, definitely going to aim to do this before I leave!!!
Could you recommend a good tailor in Goa? Or the best area to look for a tailor. Thank you!
There are lots of random ones in Anjuna. I don’t know which is best though – I have my friend who has the brand TIA here in Goa take them to her tailor – but as you can imagine fashion designers here don’t share their tailor information.
