Mysore is known for a lot: yoga, silk, Ayurveda… but food was not something I heard people rave about. It doesn’t have that expat Bangalore crowd so I didn’t think I’d find anything but Indian. Overall, I think while in Mysore eating local South Indian food is ideal. The Western stuff is okay, but it is a little behind compared to what I’d get in Goa. I tried lots of places and am listing the ones I liked a lot! There are definitely more on Tripadvisor, but well I didn’t try them so here you go!
Finding the Best Food in Mysore
1. Elements Bistro
This place is just near the goMowgli office so I ate here a couple of times while catching up on work during my free days in Mysore. I highly suggest the Mars Bar chocolate shake! I loved the corn and cheese fritters and the chicken wings were sticky and tangy- perfect. The pasta wasn’t my favorite but I’m pretty spoiled with all the Italians living in Goa. We packed chicken sandwiches from here for our picnic to Shivanasamudra Falls and I got another one parceled for my train ride to Hospet.

2. Mezzaluna
This intercontinental place is ranked high on tripadvisor and was recommended by friends. Again, I’m very spoiled in Goa, but if you’re backpacking and missing non-Indian food this is a tasty place to go although not 100% what you’d be used to. The guys all got steak and for once I went with chicken instead. It was the Mezzaluna special, with grilled chicken on and egg with gravy on top, fries, and veggies. The bread as a starter was great. It was affordable and delicious.

3. Green Hotel
I was at Green Hotel for 2 nights and 3 days and ate most of my meals here. They were divine! I think it’s my favorite spot in Mysore for lunch because of its awesome garden. If you choose to eat inside, you’ll be eating in a Princess palace so that’s a plus. The brocoli soup was fresh and tasty, the chicken platter was what I got every night at dinner, awesome HUGE breakfasts, and great coffee. The chicken sandwich was also delish and reminded me of the chicken salad my mom makes.

4. Anima Madhva Bhavan
Yummy authentic Karnatakan food is served here. You’ll sit on the floor and eat off a banana leaf. The Sambar was really good, not too spicy, and well- everything on the leaf was tasty except I don’t like the pickle side in India.
Address: 2790/1, 6th cross, Off Kalidasa road, V.V. Mohalla
5. Hakka
This place is better than any Chinese in Goa! Or SE Asian for that matter. I’d take this over mainland china or Wok n Roll and dare I say the momos were better (although different) than those at Sakana. You can’t go wrong ordering here, but the momos and spring rolls were the best. The special chicken was great as well.

6. Mahesh Prasad
Perfect quick stop for masala dosa and coffee. I had no idea how much my readers loved dosa until I posted the pic on Instagram and everyone went crazy!
7. Café Pascucci
This is a prime example of how spoiled we are as expats in Goa. This cafe is THE spot to go for expats who are missing home, yet it doesn’t compare to the tastiness I’m used to. It was okay and is definitely a nice break from South Indian food after two weeks in Karnataka, but don’t get too excited. The pizza was really good and the sandwich a friend got looked nice. The pasta was ok but not the best. The ice cream was amazing though!

8. Indus Valley Ayurvedic Center
This is healthy buffet style food. I stayed here for 3 nights, 4 days and with this menu I would have been so fit had I stayed longer! Everything was extra healthy and it was refreshing to see steamed veggies rather than over cooked curries.

Try Mutton Fry and Mutton Biryani at Nasheman (opposite St. Philomena Church). It is a different dimension to Mysorean food.
