I’m glad you enjoyed this post, I really liked writing it even though it was hard to get my point across sometimes. I’m much better at writing packing lists haha so I’m glad that some people have found this post informative for them

These are the types of posts I love most–really understanding what it was to be there, at the time, knowing the people–and I completely agree about the “not knowing where the donations are really going”. I only donate through Voice of the Martyrs and a couple pro-life organizations that I have come to trust. This was a really beautiful post in that it was so honest, and I felt what it must have been like to be you, getting to know the people. Thanks!

Yes they’ve had some interesting law changes lately. That personally wouldn’t stop me from going back, as they basically had that rule before it was “law” and the newspaper had photos of people “wanted dead” for reasons including being gay. It’s a shame. It’s a tough decision because your dollars are going toward them!

Yes, I agree time is really important to let the next generations make changes. Where I live in India it’s very corrupt as well and it’s very easy to just get used to the lifestyle where people live by bribing.

Uganda has been on my mind a lot lately as I was given the opportunity to travel there but am hesitating based on my (very strong) beliefs/morals/ethics and their lovely new laws. So this was just an interesting post to read!

Unfortunately corruption reigns in most developing countries and sadly it is often so deeply engrained into local cultures that it takes generations to change attitudes towards corruption, as most people see it as so normal. I worked as an aid worker in Cambodia for 2 years and corruption is a big problem there too from teachers, to local government officials or police. It can be beaten, but it will take a lot of awareness raising, campaigning and time to beat it.

I really want to see a lot more of Africa, I absolutely loved it when I was in Ghana.

Thats a great question. I support St. Nicolas Uganda Children’s Fund and International Animal Rescue in Goa. Financially, I am unable to support more than that … but with my medical background I really hope to get to mother Theresa’s soon to volunteer!

Thank you- I tried to lay out the facts and observations I saw without being too opinionated, but then I went on that Kony rant haha, I think you’ll like my post about the little kiddos I met there too (if you search on the site children of uganda, its a photo gallery).

That’s great that you get to go back! I think it’s important to see the “dark” side of anywhere you travel to, so that you can understand the people. In Africa there is also a touristy gorgeous side (for example I’d love to backpack the east coast), but I wouldn’t have felt right “having fun” without having first learned about life there. Enjoy your trip back!

THank you for saying that Jamie! I’m glad that you took the time to read it. I know some people would rather see beaches and sunsets, which are awesome too, but it’s good to mix it up. I will be putting up a post soon about HIV/AIDS … I don’t mention this is the post I’ll be putting up because I hate the negative comments that would for sure come, but there was a christian church in the next village “curing” people of HIV and I just would cry at the hospital when people would whisper “Ok I used to have HIV but now I dont… I was cured..” Heartbreaking. Oh, and they weren’t cured for free!

Oh, and what specific NGOs do you support?

I think, oftentimes, writings about African or other developing countries only focus on one aspect- it’s either the poverty, corruption, and the need for saving, or it ignores those issues and only focuses on things such as safaris. I think this post captures both the problems facing Uganda but also the positive aspects or things that you gained from your trip. I feel like, in general, a lot of your posts are very straightforward, and I think that that is great!

East Africa hold a special place in my heart too and like you said, I hardly ever talk about my trips there… Because it’s more than a travel destination, it’s a complex, difficult and gorgeous to understand. Thanks for posting this! Oh, Btw, yes, definitely revisit, things really are a lot better now! I’ll be heading there this summer…

You’re right and I think a lot of people don’t know they can look online to see the books of the NGO’s and make a better decision.

When I lived in Thailand the organisation I “worked” for sent 100% of the donations to the kids. They did this by relying heavily on volunteers and having some people donate purely to cover admin costs. Hence “worked”. :) But any good NGO will have transparent books and you’ll be able to see precisely the amount that goes to the people in need. So when deciding who to give money to, a little homework goes a long way.

I love also seeing the Ugandan’s perspective on the war and genocide. It’s so much more complicated than any of us in the West can imagine.

We’ll have plenty of time to talk when you’re here! Can’t wait! I have heard horror stories about the gangs and drugs lords running the slums in Bombay… I can’t remember if it was you or someone else that knew my friend Elise in Bomb? If not I”ll have to connect you two. She works with helping rich people decide where to donate money (some kind of PR job I think).
