Using Kiwi’s multicity tool when you are backpacking is literally a game-changer. If I had known about this before I backpacked India back in 2012, I would have totally done it. The most stressful part about traveling India is the transportation: long train rides, bumpy overnight buses, and searching for the right trains (which are often booked). So, the fact that you can travel most of the hotspots by flight for just $200 is the greatest present ever for a stressed out traveler!
Read my Kiwi flight booking review here.
Let me tell you how to use Kiwi’s multicity tool to travel India on the CHEAP, while in comfort!
-
When you first get on Kiwi’s website, you need to click “multicity” where you see “return” and “one-way”.
-
You need to set a starting point. I chose Delhi, as often international flights come into Delhi.
-
Choose the “To” as “Anywhere”
When the results pop up, you’ll want to choose the cheapest one to start – and you don’t want to backtrack, so you’ll want to think about a decent order you can go in. Jaipur is the cheapest at just $21, and Rajasthan (the state that Jaipur is in) is the best for tourists!
I’ll tell you, paying $21 for a flight sure as hell beats all the other alternatives. You’d pay around $10 for a train ticket anyway.
After you select that destination to Jaipur, click the blue button that says “add flight”. Then, it’ll automatically populate Jaipur to: and you should click again, “anywhere”.
You can continue doing this until you think you’ve covered the places you want to see. Just make sure you don’t go backward. Keep choosing to move onward, in this case, I did so in a counter-clockwise direction.
Once I was done this is what my flight path looked like:
Delhi > Jaipur > Udaipur > Mumbai > Goa > Bangalore > Hyderabad > Chennai
That’s 7 flights covering a huge chunk of India and most of these would be on your backpacking list, all for $200, well $199.73 to be exact. Kiwi is the lowest price flight search engine I’ve found yet. And no, this isn’t a sponsored post!
You can see all the flight options in this “box” above which has all 7 flights laid out. However, you can scroll down to more boxes where there are the same flights at different times and there were about 10 options with different times that were exactly the same price.
Just select the timings you like best, and click “book this flight” and you can book all 7 flights at once! It will look like this:
Your flight e-tickets will all be sent to your email and phone if you give them a phone number.
I always tell people when you backpack India, the biggest mistake people make is trying to see too much. That is because on a budget you travel by train and bus in India. But, that takes a lot of time and stress which is why I say don’t put too many destinations on your India bucket list.
In the case that you are flying, though, it’s so much less stress and saves so much time that you can add a lot on to your journey. It’s definitely something to think about, even if you do this just for part of your trip!
I love booking with Kiwi because of their flight guarantee and because they are BY FAR the lowest prices I ever find online. Here’s a review of Kiwi.
PS If you’re coming to India and will spend a week of more in Goa, check out my ebook the Insider’s Guide to Goa. After five years of living here, I’m sure this 170-page book is the most comprehensive guide to Goa on the market.
Hi Rachel! How far in advance of the dates you picked did you do the search? I can never seem to price flights as far away as December with Kiwi? Being to fly my way through my 6 week India trip in November-December would make me so happy!! :)
This was about a month in advance, but you can click on the date and change it as you go as well. I hope you find something good, flying does make things a lot easier and less stressful
Hello Rachel,
I am planning to travel East Europe during September 2017, could you please tell me some online tools to help me plan a budget trip ? Or could you point me to somewhere in your blog if you have already written about it.
Thanks

INDIA visit is must as it is one of the most beautiful n heritage places on the EARTH.
This is extremely helpful! I will be traveling to India in October and knowing that I can travel by plane cheaply is a huge help! Also LOVE your travel resources page! Knowing what to pack and what to take is one of my biggest concerns.
Cheap flights are wonderful in India when train journeys can be quite exhausting compared to somewhere like Europe.
HI Rachel, have you found that Kiwi only gives you options for hand luggage only flights? I have not figured out yet how to add checked in baggage?
When you go to pay it will have add checked luggage and a set fee that they calculate – but there are SOME routes where they say they cannot add the luggage and you’ll have to add it when you check in, directly with the airline. This happened to me when I just booked for Rajasthan.
