This post hardly needs any intro other than the title, but it feels wrong to just show you photos of cows in India and not explain why they are so awesome. Today I am in a funky mood and thought I’d share this little photo album instead of such serious tips about India!
They are holy and they are EVERYWHERE. You’ll see them outside 5 star hotels, in the street, and laying out tanning their hides on the beach. The babies are adorable. I thought growing up next to a farm with them that I wouldn’t be shocked by them here. I was wrong. It’s such a unique quality of India, almost no one can visit here without relaying to friends about “the cows!!”. So without further delay, here are some of my favorite photos I’ve taken of them.
just shopping for a new scarf
strolling through the market
security outside our house
road block cows
mom and baby getting their tan on
looks mean, but was nice
outside my hotel, um, scuse me mr. cow I need through
my favorite baby of all time was discovering his tongue for a good 20 minutes
looks mean, was mean, pinned me against a wall… ripped my ali baba rants right off! Tell you more about that later, I promise
they’re too cute to fight, but no one told them
just waiting for the train to Udaipur
in Goa, straight chillin’
this one went to Clare’s before stopping by my house
Now for a little more cow inspiration with some photos from flickr. I’m clearly not the only one who loves Indian cows. Actually, my friend Saffron loves them so much she draws them on the regular.

Nice photos. The one at the station is quite nice. They are everywhere not because they are holy. It’s because they are used for milk and people prefer fresh milk. Many places don’t have the usual shops where they can buy milk like you have in the UK.
I never noticed there were cows everywhere – living in India, they seem to become a part and parcel of our daily lives. Also, having actually petted quite a few of them, we dont fear them – and actually like these harmless creatures.
Do agree that they dont suit the streets – especially in larger cities….but thats India….even Indians cant do much about it.
I have stopped noticing them so much too after all this time! They are such sweet things (except the one who tried to kill me)
I love this post :) Seeing cows in the UK is such a novelty, I think they should roam freely like they do in India! I am curious as to what the mean, mean cow did to you though haha xx
Be careful what you wish for lol and yes, one day I’ll share what happened!
Aren’t they wild and aggressive to people? It must be weird to see them in the street just like that LOL :D
That’s amazing! I can’t even imagine
Most are older photos as I’ve gotten so used to them I don’t think to take photos anymore!
Yeah, the cows are hilarious here. Love the photo of the one shopping for a new scarf, haha brilliant. The best was when I saw two in Nallasopara (a suburb of Mumbai) … they were at the train station just walking along with the sea of people going to work, and they looked like they had some place to be as well. Classic India. Too bad I didn’t have my camera ready to capture that one!
ahhh hate when that happens! You gotta be one of those that carries on neck at. all. times!!
Aww wow I all the cows just moseying around! I wouldn’t mind some cows wandering around my neighbourhood. The cow in the train station is my favourite.
They are SO so cute! I have seen lots more at the train station than that but never had my camera ready!
Really cute! So many cow photos! You have managed to click some really nice shots there. Thanks for this lovely post, Rachel. :)
Thanks! I love the baby licking the most.
Love the cows! It took me a while to find the cow in the next to last photo and then I saw its butt sticking out of the house! This made my morning :-)
hahha, today at the beach I saw another super cute one. He was digging in the sand really hard to make a little bed. but every pic I took it just looked like he was standing there.
They’re adorable! I love how they are just hanging out, all chill.
But we need to hear the story about the one that tried to kill you!
I keep telling myself I need to write that one- it’s a shame the monster bruise and slash he left on me were on my butt cheek so I can’t share the pic!
That’s simply incredible! I’m a big animal lover and I just imagine a world where animals would all be free like these cows :)
wouldn’t that be nice!
